![]() They're just machines every bit as capable as PCs and consoles 10-15 years ago, and can even match them on peripherals. I've just been thinking about the negative reputation mobile gaming has and whether that has to persist. Hell, even something like a Halo 1 splitscreen experience could conceivably be possible eventually, as phones will obviously have the power to render it before too long. You could have Bomberman, Mario Party, all kinds of simple or even complex games through such a setup. Ideally, the experience will be a phone in your pocket (or charging nearby) powering the game on the TV with controllers connected via BlueTooth (or whatever other method is available by then). The blog even notes Driver Speedboat Paradise as a game that lets you put the main game on your TV through the Chromecast and the controls on your phone. I recently came across this Polygon post reporting on a Google Developers Blog post about new Google Cast APIs that seem to indicate Google working towards what I hope is the future of "mobile" gaming's potential. That should avoid the need to upgrade your streaming device like you would a PC or console connected to the TV. Part of what I figure will be the future is pretty much a Chromecast-like setup where the box you connect to can handle the feed between several devices (Splitscreen!) that are doing the actual rendering. It'll be a while, but phones have the advantage of already being in people's pockets, already being upgraded every couple of years (as opposed to being dedicated machines that need to be upgraded for the sole purpose of games), and having more money invested in R&D (everyone's trying to make a better phone, but only a handful of companies are trying to make better consoles and PC parts). Continued abuse of our services will cause your IP address to be blocked indefinitely. So I've figured for a while that phones and tablets could pretty easily replace consoles and PCs as the primary platform games are played on, especially simpler party games.
